A minha 1ª surfada do ano com ondas acima do metro e qualquer coisa. Apesar das fortes correntes e das grandes remadas diverti-me imenso, fiz boas manobras e a surfada correu-me bem. Algumas fotos já no fim da surfada, foi pena não ter havido desde o início mas é melhor que nada:

My first session of the year with waves up to 1m+. Despite of the strong currents and long paddels I had a great time, done good moves and the session pretty much went well for me. Some photos already at the end of the session, unfortenetly there was no one out shooting since the begining, but this is better than nothing:

Tenho andado no sony vegas estes últimos dias a fazer vários vídeos com o intituto de evoluir na edição de clips pois para o meu próximo vídeo-profile quero que seja outra dimensão em termos de qualidade e edição em relação aos meus últimos vídeos. De qualquer das formas aqui vai um video em que tenho vindo a testar o super slow-motion no sony vegas. Apesar de não ficar muito bom (se tivesse uma phantom as coisas seriam diferentes ahah) achei interessante partilhar aqui na página.

I've been editing stuff in sony vegas in the last coupla days cause i want to improve on the editing for my next video-profile coming up april or so I want it to be really really good. Anyways here's the latest clip I edited, i've been testing the slow-motion on sony vegas, although it isn't anything of amazing (if I had a phantom cam things would be different) I though it interesting to share with you in my page. enjoy!

Apenas para manter o blog atualizado... Apanhei muitos boas ondas no passado sábado de manhã, fiz manboras incríveis e tive pena por o Carlos Duarte não ter lá estado presente para captar, mas também nem sempre pode estar... Haverá mais sessões produtivas, foi a primeira surfada do ano em que saí da água super satisfeito, diverti-me imenso.

Just to keep the blog updated... I scored pretty good waves last saturday morning, i've done a couple of amazing maneurvers and unfortenetly Carlos Duarte wasn't there to capture, but he can't be always there when we wish... It's alright, there will have more great sessions to come for sure, although it's was the first session of this year that I really enjoyed.

Carcavelos Pro 2011: Resume

Cheguei a Lisboa no dia 13 de Dezembro há noite. Esperava-me fora do aeroporto o meu amigo Nunito que eu ficaria com ele em casa dos seus pais os primeiros dois dias pois as previsões para a Ericeira estavam uma porcaria e ia estar melhor na área de Lisboa. Infelizmente o Nunito estava com uma infenção nos brônquios e não podia apanhar frio, tendo que estar a maior parte do tempo fechado em casa. Planeávamos fazer um vídeo mas vai ter que ficar para uma próxima vez infelizmente.

I arrived in Lisbon on December 13 at night. My friend Nunito was waiting me outside the airport to catch me, we were staying in his parents' house the first two days as the forecast for Ericeira wans't good and would be better in that area. Unfortunately Nunito was sick, we were planning to make a video but Nunito wasn't able to go film so we'll make it next year unfortenetly.

Apanhei umas ondas em Carcavelos, no primeiro dia estava bom mas muito crowd e muitas correntes e no segundo dia estava grande e difícil de apanhar uma boa, mas foi divertido.

Scored some waves at Carcavelos, the first day was good but too much crowd and currents and the next day was big and hard to find a good wave, but it was pretty fun anyway.

Nesse mesmo dia à noite mudei-me para a casa de um amigo, o Guilherme Guerra pois também ia competir no Nacional. No primeiro dia de competição apenas foi a Ronda 1 para a água, o meu heat era dos últimos da ronda 2. As condições estavam um pouco más por isso só fizeram a ronda 1 de manhã.

In that same day at night I moved to my friend's house Guilherme Guerra for the comp that would happen in the next few days. In the first day of competition the organisers decided to make only round 1 in the morning and leave the rest for the next day, I was for the last heats of round 2 so I just only compited in the next day. The conditions were bad so they did the right thing.

No segundo dia avançaram com as rondas 2 e 3. O mar já estava bem melhor, digo mesmo que estavam altas ondas, passei o meu heat na ronda 2 na 2ª posição, fiz apenas uns rollos que foi o suficiente para passar à vontade. Na ronda 3 já tinha uma bateria mais difícil, portanto tinha de arriscar mais, fiz um heat só a manobrar ARS's, que no fim correu me muito bem e posso dizer que foi das minhas melhores baterias até ao momento, em termos de desempenho. Passei em 1º lugar, tendo liderado o tempo inteiro e fazer o 5º score mais alto do campeonato, 16pts. Estava muito motivado para o dia seguinte.

Day 2 of competition organisers made rounds 2 and 3. The waves were much better, I passed my heat in round 2 in the 2nd position, just did a couple of rollos that was enough to make it trought to round 3. In my heat of round 3 it was a bid harder so I needed to go big. I just did a couple of ARS's, at the end it was worth it and I got out of the water preety happy with my surfing, probably one of my best heats so far in terms of surfing. I passed in 1st place, making the 5th bigger score of the whole comp, 16pts. I was motivated for the next day.

No dia a seguir, o mar caíu um bocado, mas permitiu à mesma terminar o cameponato. Estava na última bateria dos quartos de final, e passei este mesmo em 2º lugar. Fiquei contente pois estava muito perto da final e de bater o meu melhor resultado de sempre (7º lugar na 1ª etapa do Nacional em 2010 na ilha de São Miguel, Açores). No meu heat das meias finais, veio poucas ondas e estive o heat todo na 3ª posição, nos últimos 30 segundos consegui mandar um rollo e ir para a 2ª posição mas nos últimos 10 segundos voltei para a 3ª posição pois quem estava na 3ª posição conseguiu mandar um bom rollo e obter a pontuação necessária para ficar com o 2º lugar. Por pouco não estive nas meias finais 'man-on-man' em que obtia pelo menos um 3º lugar. Mas mesmo assim não está nada mau, estou contente por um 5º lugar por ter batido o meu recorde e obter um resultado aquém das minhas expetativas. Foi um resultado crítico para ficar no Top 16.

In the final day, the waves dropped off, but still contestable to finish the contest. I was in the last heat of the quarter finals, I had luck to score a couple of waves to make it throught in the 2nd position to the semis. I was stoked to be soo close to the final and to be close aswell to have a new record (my best result ever was an 7th place at the 1st stage of the National Tour held at São Miguel, Azores last year). In my semi finals heat, it didn't came too much waves and I had been during almost all heat in 3rd place, in the last 30 seconds I passed to the 2nd position but then I passed again to the 3rd position in the last 10 seconds, the 3rd place guy made a good roll that was enought to return to the 2nd place. I was soo close to be in the semis 'man-on-man', that I would guarantee at least a 3rd place. Anyway I'm stoked with a 5th place and to break my record of my best result ever, and I never though I would go soo far in this comp. This was a critical result to make to the Top 16.

Neste meu segundo ano consecutivo no Circuito Nacional de Bodyboard Open, conseguiu uma vez mais um lugar entre o Top 16 Nacional, um 13º lugar. Subi um lugar em relação ao ano passado, em que obtive um 14º lugar. Estou muito satisfeito com reste resultado e espero melhorar no próximo ano!

This was my second year on the National Tour, and I earned again a spot on the Top 16, a 13th place in the final rankings. Got one place better than last year, that I had a 14th place. I'm happy with this result and I'm looking forward to improve it next year!

Carcavelos Pro 2011 - 5th place = Top 16 again

Fui até às meias finais do Carcavelos Pro 2011, perdi nos últimos 10 segundos em 3º lugar no heat o que equivale a um 5º lugar na geral. Superei o meu recorde, que era um 7º na etapa do Nacional em 2010 aqui em S. Miguel. Farei um report completo muito em breve desta minha viagem ao continente por isso fiquem atentos aqui ao blog, para verem updated diários vão à minha página oficial de atleta no Facebook AQUI. Entretanto fiquem aqui com duas sequências de ARS no meu heat da Ronda 3 ontem ao final do dia, provavelmente dos meus melhores heats até hoje, fiz um score de 16pts com uma onda de 8. tal e outra de 7. tal e estive sempre em 1º lugar o heat todo.

I went through the semis in Carcavelos Pro 2011, lost in the last 10sec in 3rd position in my heat wich is an equal 5th in the final ranking of the comp. Just got a new record, my best result ever before was an 7th back at August 2010 at the National Tour stage at here S. Miguel. Meanwhile here's 2 sequences of 2 ARS's in my Round 3 heat yesterday at late afternoon, probably one of my best heats soo far, did a score of 16pts combined with my 2 best waves: an 8.something and a 7.something and I've been in first place during all heat.

Amanhã há noite estarei em Lisboa, parece que as previsões tão muito boas e quero aproveitar para surfar umas ondas boas antes da 4ª e última etapa do CNBBO no próximo fim de semana, dias 16-18.

A VERT#107 saíu hoje para as bancas. Fui supreendido ao ver no clip do teaser desta edição um invert meu em dupla página, tirada em Setembro pelo meu amigo Ricardo Amaral. Já há algum tempo que não saía na Vert o que me deixava um pouco em baixo. Esta foi sem dúvida uma boa recompensa de todo esse tempo, agora é não parar. Fiquei também contente por ter saído uma parte dedicada aqui aos Açores onde também aparece alguns amigos meus com muito boas fotos. A minha preferida é sem dúvida o invert animal do Luís 'Miguili' Furtado no Pópulo (42seg). Podem ver no clip do teaser abaixo:

VERT#107 is out. I was suprised as I was watching the teaser issue and saw an invert mine featured in double page, taken at September by Ricardo Amaral. It has been a while since I appeared in vert wich i was a bit sad. But all that time was defently rewarding now. I was happy seeing aswell that is an articule from the Azores where it shows my good friends with some great photos. My favourite's definetly that massive invert from Luis 'Miguili' Furtado in Pópulo (42sec). You can watch it on the issue teaser below:

Azores Islands Bodyboarding Festival (2)

Voltei hoje para casa, visto já ter perdido em competição e estando a gastar dinheiro e a perder aulas, decidi voltar para casa e voltar à vida normal. No mundial no meu heat a história repetiu-se exatamente igual ao do Nacional, liderei o heat a tempo inteiro e nos últimos 2 minutos o Andrew Lester fez um tubão de 8.33pts que passou logo para 1º lugar ficando eu na 2º posição. Nos últimos segundos, o francês que estava no meu heat, apanhou uma onda que fez um tubo e obteve o score necessário para passar para 2º, ficando eu eliminado em 3º.

Fiquei super triste e chateado com a derrota, não tive a "vingança" que queria ter no Mundial para "limpar" o resultado medíocre no Nacional. Apesar disso, sinto que ganhei experiência e aprendi mais, principalmente ter um gajo como o Lester no heat, ex campeão mundial e atual campeão nacional australiano, sem dúvida uma fera!

Pondo os resultados de parte, apanhei altas ondas durante os dias de free surf, tive altos momentos, tive um apoio fantástico pelo pessoal açoriano, a minha mãe e não só. Por isso apesar de ficar revoltado com os resultados, tenho motivos para ficar contente por ter tido a oportunidade em ter feito parte deste fantástico festival onde tive a oportunidade de ver os meus atletas de topo favoritos a surfar e conviver com eles.

Quero agradecer à Direção Regional da Juventude e aos meus pais pelo apoio financeiro, sem eles esta viagem não seria possível, ao Simão Carvalho pela fantástica estadia na sua belíssima casa e ao resto do pessoal que me apoiou atráves da internet, mensagens, fora de água, etc. Muito obrigado a todos, esta prova os Açores esteve junto e os nossos brilharam e isso foi motivo para me deixar super feliz por nós, Açoreanos!

Começa daqui a umas horas o mundial de qualificação da IBA. Vou entrar no heat 7 contra o mítico Andrew Lester e o francês Julien Le Sehan. É um previlégio entrar num heat com o Andrew Lester, no qual estou habituado a vê-lo em dezenas de fotos/vídeos/net/etc. Aqui vai uma sequência de um inverse na surfada de hoje ao final do dia com a companhia de Joe Clarke, Andrew Lester, Adam Morley, Alex Uranga, Carina Carvalho, Paulo Costa e Sérgio Rego.

Azores Islands Bodyboarding Festival

Cheguei à ilha da Terceira na passada quarta-feira, dia 16, pelas 10:15h da manhã acompanhado de alguns meus amigos também da ilha de S. Miguel. Viemos à Terceira para participar no Azores Islands Bodyboarding Festival, que consiste na 3ª etapa do Circuito Nacional de Bodyboard Open e na última etapa do IBA GQS Tour, evento de 6 estrelas. O campeonato Nacional acabou ontem (Sábado) tendo como vencedores Hugo Pinheiro e Rita Pires. Perdi no 1º dia logo no meu 1º heat. O mar no primeiro dia estava grande, estavam condições perigosas e qualquer erro alguém poderia ficar muito mal. Santa apresentava-se com ondas entre 2-3m com vento side-shore. O meu heat era na Ronda 2 tendo como adversários o Tiago 'Moita' Silva (atual Campeão Nacional Open), Paulo 'Paulinho' Costa (Presidente da APB e um veterano em competição) e o João Pinheiro (um dos melhores bodyboarders de Sagres). Antes de entrar na heat estava super nervoso, acho que nunca tinha estado tão nervoso, pois o mar tava grande e queria passar o heat e 'sobreviver' àquelas condições.

O meu desempenho foi para além das minhas expetativas. Decidi apostar em ondas mais inside pois como no meu heat a maré estava muito vazia eram raras as ondas maiores que entravam certinhas. Tive sorte em sacar uma onda com um ARS e as minhas restantes com rollos projetados. Estive o heat inteiro em 2º lugar e inclusive em 1º lugar mas nos últimos segundos o Paulinho apanhou uma onda, fez um tubo e teve o score que precisava para ir para 2º lugar, 6.65pts, ficando eu em 3º lugar.

Fiquei um pouco desapontado pois estava super motivado na água com todo o apoio dos meus amigos cá fora nas pedras dando-me imensa força e apesar de não ter passado, aprendi com os erros e fiquei contente com o meu desempenho. Só espero que agora no Mundial as coisas corram bem, já tive a oportunidade de cumprimentar o Joe Clarke e o Tom Rigby que estão aqui para o mundial, ainda conheci ontem à noite o Adam Morley que também está aqui para o Mundial.

As previsões para o mundial para o 1º dia estão muito boas! Mal posso esperar woow.

Nestas últimas semanas não tem acontecido nada de mais para se justificar atualizar o blog. As ondas foram muito poucas, o horário escolar apertado e agora entro na altura de testes, que por coincidência também é altura de vir umas ondas boas nos próximos dias. Como estou sedento para apanhar umas ondas boas, vou organizar bem o meu tempo para surfar/estudar.

There hasn't happening much in the last couple weeks to justify updating the blog. The waves were pretty bad, tight school schedule and now it's the tests season which coincidentally with some good waves coming. I can't wait to score some good waves, so I will organize my time to surf and study.

Tenho contado estes dias para o 'Azores Bodyboarding Festival 2011'. Como o nome indica, é um festival de Bodyboard que irá ocorrer na ilha da Terceira, com a realização da 3ª etapa do Circuito Nacional de Bodyboard Open (entre os dias 18-20 Novembro) e a última etapa do mundial do circuito de qualificação, GQS (Global Qualifying Series) de 6 estrelas.
Espero que a mãe natureza nos proporcione dias memoráveis de ondas, que é disto que precisamos para elevar o Bodyboard aqui pelos Açores e em Portugal para serem cada vez mais pessoas o verdadeiro Bodyboard. Mal posso esperar, vai ser na onda de Santa Catarina, onde tive oportunidade de lá surfar em Junho, numa mini-trip feita com uns amigos onde apanhei altas ondas! Vou aproveitar estes próximos dias que prometem boas ondas para voltar à boa forma física e conssistência.
Espero dar-me bem em ambos os campeonatos. Espero também receber os meus novos fatos da Reeflex (vindos diretamente da Austrália) a tempo dos campeonatos, mal posso esperar para os receber e juntar-me aos 'chest-zip lovers'.

I've been counting down the days for the upcoming 'Azores Bodyboarding Festival 2011'. As the name implies, it's a festival that will occur Bodyboarding in Terceira island, with the completion of the 3rd Nacional stage of the National Circuit Bodyboard Open (between 18-20 November) and the last stage of the IBA GQS (Global Qualifying Series), 6 star event.
I hope that mother nature gives us memorable days of waves, which is what we need to raise the bodyboarding here in Azores to more people see what's the real Bodyboard. I can't wait, it will be in Santa Catarina's wave, where I had the opportunity to surf there in last June, made a mini-trip with some friends where we scored great waves!
These next few days are looking good so i'm going to enjoy it as much as i can and at the same time back to good shape and conssistency.
I hope I can do well in both comps. I also hope to receive my new Reeflex suits (coming directly from Australia) at time of the comps, can't wait to have them and to join to the 'chest-zip lovers'.

Bem, após 4 dias sem parar no Continente, cheguei ontem a São Miguel. Surfei todos os dias lá, em spots como Carcavelos, Cova do Vapor, Pedra Branca e Backdoor.

Well, after 4 non-stop days in Portugal's mainland, I arrived yesterday at São Miguel. I surfed everyday there, in spots like Carcavelos, Cova do Vapor, Pedra Branca and Backdoor.

Gostei muito de lá estar e desde já agradeço imenso ao Dr. Bruno Pacheco e à Dra. Marília da Direcção Regional da Juventude pelo apoio financeiro fundamental nesta viagem, ao meu amigo fotógrafo Ricardo Amaral por ter-me recebido bem em sua casa e também à sua namorada por todos os dias que lá estive aparecer à noite lá em casa trazendo sempre um belo de um jantar e por estar sempre disposta em ajudar-nos sempre que precisassemos. Ao Pedro Monteiro por ter sido 5 estrelas, conheci-o pessoalmente no dia em que ele levou-me à Ericeira para o 1º dia de competição, super simpático e tranquilo e além do mais levou-me ao aeroporto duas vezes (a 1ª vez perdi o voo) sempre na boa. Também à minha mãe e amigos aqui de São Miguel pela força e apoio que me deram, apesar da distância, sabia e sentia o apoio deles. Muito obrigado a todos vocês!! É indispensável o vosso apoio, sem vocês nunca tinha chegado onde cheguei e onde poderei chegar, é tão bom ter isso e sinto-me um sortudo por tê-lo! woooow

I really enjoyed being there and I thank alot to Dr. Bruno Pacheco and Dra. Marilia of the Regional Directorate of Youth for the financial support for this trip, to my photographer friend Ricardo Amaral for receiving me to his home and also to his girlfriend for all days I was there at night there she appears always bringing a nice dinner and for always being willing to help us whenever we needed, to Pedro Monteiro to have been 5 stars to me. I met him personally on the day he took me to Ericeira for the 1st day of competition, super friendly and quiet and besides he took me to the airport two times (the 1st time I lost my flight) always a cool guy. Also to my mom and friends back here in São Miguel for the strength and support they gave me, despite the distance, I knew and I felt their support. Thank you all! It is essential your support, without you guys I've never come to where I am and where I can get aswell, it's so nice to have your support and I feel very fortunate to have it! woooow

Fiz boas fotos com o Ricardo Amaral, irei actualizar em próximos dias em breve (estou só há espera que o fotógrafo envie-me as fotos). Desde o ano passado que tinha uma vontade enorme de surfar uma onda em especial, a Cova do Vapor. É um autêntico parque de diversões para Bodyboard com tubos, lips e rampas. Nesta viagem tive a oportunidade de lá surfar e adorei a onda, apesar de não ter apanhado com condições mesmo clássicas, mas fiquei super contente por lá ter surfado. Espero que na próxima vez consiga lá surfar com condições épicas!

I scored good shots with Ricardo Amaral, I'll update it in the next days soon (I'm just waiting for the photos). Since last year I had an urge to surf a wave in particular, called Cova do Vapor. It's really a playground for Bodyboard with barrels, ramps and lips. On this trip I had the opportunity to surf there and I loved it! Although I didn't scored with classic conditions, but I was so glad to surf there anyway. Hopefully next time I can score Cova with epic conditions!

Em relação ao Nacional, cheguei até aos quartos de final. No 1º dia da prova passei o meu heat ao final do dia e depois saí da água a correr para ir o mais depressa possível para o aeroporto para apanhar o avião para S. Miguel a tempo de entrar na Taça Açores, pois fiquei um pouco desmotivado ao ver as previsões para o fim de semana na Ericeira. Acabei por perder o voo e ficar completamente frustrado, mas penso que valeu a pena pois voltei para a Ericeira e passei o meu heat para os quartos de final mas perdi depois. Mesmo assim não é um mau começo mas sinto que poderia ter chegado mais longe...

In relation to the National comp, I went to the quarter-finals. On the 1st day I passed my heat in 2nd place at the and of the day and then I left the water as soon as I could to get to the airport to catch a flight to S. Miguel in time to enter at the Cup Azores comp, because I was a bit discouraged to see the forecast for the weekend in Ericeira. I ended up losing the flight and get completely frustrated, but I think it was worth it to get back to Ericeira and I passed my 2nd heat for the quarter finals but then lost it. Yet it's not a bad start but I feel I could have gone better...

Mas pronto, a viagem foi muito positiva e aprendi imenso, pois fui o único açoreano a lá ir. Foi nesta viagem que notei que cresci mais um pouco em desenrrascar-me e senti-me com mais liberdade no campeonato, sem opiniões e pressões dos outros, fiz tudo por mim mesmo sem precisar das opiniões dos outros e não me arrependo das minhas decisões e isso é muito importante para um atleta avaliar as condições do mar, o local onde estão as melhores ondas, etc por si mesmo.

But it's ok, the trip was very positive and I learned a lot, because I was the only Azorean to go there. It was on this trip I felt that I grew a little more to do more things by myself and I felt more freedom in the comp, no pressure and opinions of other people, I did everything by myself without the opinions of others and I don't regret of any decision and this is very important for an athlete to evaluate the conditions of the sea, where re the best waves, etc by him.

Vi nos Esperanças e até agora no Nacional que alguns atletas são muito dependentes dos treinadores e isso acaba por ser mau, pois futuramente em Mundiais fora de Portugal ou até mesmo em Nacionais na qual o treinador não possa estar presente, esse mesmo atleta não saberá como estar na água pois está habituado a que o treinador veja o mar por si, avalie as condições do mar por si, a dar-lhe as indicações na água, etc. E até mesmo com treinadores presentes é mau para esses atletas pois têm de estar constantemente a olhar para terra para estar atento às indicações do treinador e olhar para terra sempre que ouvir assobios e berros. Isso acaba por fazer com que um atleta se sinta pressionado e acaba por se desconcentrar.

I saw on the Groms comp and so far in the National that some athletes are very dependent of their coaches and it turns out to be bad, because in the future World comps outside Portugal or even national in which the coach can't be present, this same athlete won't know how to be in the water because he's used to his coach do everything for him.. And even with these coaches is bad for these athletes because they have to be constantly looking for land to be tunned to the coaches indications and to look for land whenever they hear whistles and screams. This turns out to make an athlete feel pressured and ultimately to devolve.

Acho que esses atletas que são mais dependentes têm de começar a aprender a fazer as coisas sozinhos pois assim vão crescer e evoluir mais ainda.

Acabei de marcar a minha passagem para o Continente para amanhã de manhã. As previsões para os próximos dias são muito boas e eu quero aproveitar que já que vou ao Nacional, surfar novas ondas e fazer novas amizades. Just ticket my flight to Portugal for tomorrow morning. Forecasts for the next few days 's pretty good there and I'll go earlier to surf new waves and make new friends. Esta última semana foi épica! Deu ondas todos os dias desde 6ª feira passada, em 3 spots diferentes. Entrou um swell no Sul que já não entravam com um tamanho desses há cerca de 4 anos. Este swell entrou no passado Domingo e tem-se aguentado ainda, apesar de já estar pequenito, mas nos primeiros dias ainda deu ondas com cerca de 2/3m com algumas até maiores. Na 3ª feira ao final do dia entrou a maior e melhor onda desta semana que devia chegar os 4m e ela partiu mesmo à minha frente. Foi a maior onda que já vi há minha frente sem dúvida.

Em 5 dias surfei 16 vezes, havia dias que surfava 3 vezes por dia, aproveitei ao máximo estas ondas e por agora as previsões pioraram mas já para a semana já começa outra vez a mesma rotina espero eu. :)

This last week was epic! Waves everyday since last friday, in 3 different spots. It came aswell an big south swell, the last time was 4 years ago that came a big south swell. The swell came last Sunday and has still endured, but todays's already small, but in the early days was 6-10ft waves with some bigger ones. In tuesday afternoon I saw the biggest and the best wave of this week's big swell that was about 12ft and I took with it in my head. It was the biggest wave I've ever seen breaking in front of me for sure.

In five days I surfed 16 times, some days I surfed 3 times a day, made the most of these waves and for now the forecast's a bit bad but for the next week it will start the same routine, i hope. :)

Esta viagem foi confirmada um dia antes de embarcar-mos nesta aventura, composta por mim, Pedro Correia, Ivo Batista e o fotógrafo Ricardo Amaral. No dia 27 de Julho, quando passava um pouco mais das 15 horas, estávamos em direcção a uma ilha em que iríamos lá ficar por uma noite, ainda tivemos a oportunidade de rever alguns amigos nossos e de conviver um pouco com a malta de lá. No dia a seguir (28 Julho), por volta das 9h e pouco, já estávamos no barco e em direcção à ilha destinada a esta nossa pequena viagem.

This trip was confirmed one day before we embark on this adventure, consisting me, Pedro Correia, Ivo Batista and photographer Ricardo Amaral. On July 27 around 3pm, we were on our way to an island by boat where we would stay there for a night and we still had the opportunity to review some of our friends and socialize a bit with the fellas there. The next day (July 28), around 9am, we were on the boat and making our way to the island of this mini-trip.

Estivemos 4 dias nesta ilha, divertimo-nos imenso. Apesar da falta de ondas, deu para ver uma data de spots, com um potencial enorme, apreciar paisagens incríveis e quando o tempo estava bom dava para vermos algumas ilhas vizinhas. Simplesmente fantástico! Ainda tivemos a oportunidade de ver uma tourada, de ir às festas tradicionais e à disco local.

We stayed 4 days on there, awesome times. Even with very small waves, we cheked a lot of spots, with enormous potential, we enjoyed amazing landscapes and when the weather was good we could see the neighboring islands. Simply amazing! We also had the opportunity to see a "bullfight", going to traditional partys and a local disco.

Esta foto acima foi a nossa principal razão desta viagem. Infelizmente o swell não entrou como esperávamos. Ficará para uma próxima vez. O potencial está lá sem dúvida.

Esta ilha é perfeita. Tem paisagens de sonho, inúmeras ondas com um potencial incrível, crowd inexistente... É uma autêntica pérola. Mal posso esperar para lá voltar com umas previsões bem melhores.

This island is perfect. It has landscapes of dream, many waves with an incredible potential, non-existent crowd... It's an real pearl. Can't wait to go back there with a better forecast.

As únicas duas surfadas que demos enquanto lá estivemos foi apenas num spot onde estava a quebrar uns 20cm, fundo de pedra muito raso. Por acaso a onda até era divertida.

The only two surf sessions we had was only in one spot where it was 1 foot waves, very shallow rock bottom. It was fun anyway.

Bodyboard Trip: Somewhere around Azores...

Tomorrow i'm heading to another island somewhere around Azores till Sunday along with Pedro 'Pedrim' Correia, Ivo Batista and phtographer Ricardo Amaral. It's a 5 days trip to search the best waves in that island and make the best photos to feature in bodyboard magazines... The forecast's looking pretty cool. And today I received my Reeflex wetsuits for this summer. Can't wait for this trip!

Amanhã vou para outra ilha aqui nos Açores até Domingo acompanhado por Pedro 'Pedrim' Correia, Ivo Batista e o fotógrafo Ricardo Amaral. Teremos 5 dias para procurar as melhores ondas nesta ilha and fazer as melhores fotos para depois sair em revistas de Bodyboard. As previsões apontam boas ondas. Hoje também recebi o meu fato da Reeflex para este Verão. Mal posso esperar que comece esta viagem!

Este mês tem sido muito fraco de ondas. A melhor surfada até agora este mês foi no dia dos meus anos (e que prenda!). E por agora o mar tem estado mau e não parece ser melhor nos próximos dias... A aguardar por Agosto que espero que seja bem melhor.

This month has been pretty weak in terms of waves. The best session i got this month was in my birthday (what a present!). For now the waves have been bad and doesn't seem to get better in the next days... Waiting for August that I hope that will be better.

Figueira da Foz: 4ª Etapa Esperanças & Pro Junior

No dia 25 de Junho pelas 8:50h estava eu a levantar voo em direção a Lisboa. Cheguei pelas 11:50h (hora local), e fui directamente ter com o Nuno Cardoso que estava à minha espera cá fora. Fomos para a sua casa (Ericeira) mas nesse dia não surfei pois não havia ondas. Fomos para a praia dos Coxos apanhar sol. No dia a seguir (26 Junho), ao fim do dia, tive a oportunidade de apanhar Reef com umas ondas boas. No dia seguinte (27 Junho) fomos ao Boss e entrámos mas estava pequeno e muito incossistente. Saímos da água e o Nunito deixou-me na Pedra Branca que estava a dar umas ondas com 15 gajos na água, mas ainda assim fiz umas ondas fixes.

On June 25 arround 8:50am I was taking off to Lisbon. I arrived arround 11:50pm (local time), and went straight outside to meet Nuno Cardoso, who was waiting me. Then we went to his house (Ericeira) but we did not surfed that day because it's wad flat. SO we went to Coxos beach for sunbathing. The following day (June 26) at the end of the day, I had the opportunity to score some good waves on Reef. The next day (June 27) I went to Boss and we got in but it was small and very incossistent. We left the water early and Nuno left me in Pedra Branca wich had some waves with 15 guys in the water, but still did some cool waves.

Nesse mesmo dia o Nuno foi-me deixar a Carcavelos pelas 16h, mais propriamente à sede da CRCQL (Centro Recreativo e Cultural da Quinta dos Lombos) onde esperava-me a Puremocean, uma escola de Bodyboard local de Carcavelos onde já conhecia o professor da escola, Paulinho Costa, desde que ele e a sua escola tinha cá vindo aos Açores ao 1º Nacional Open. Já conhecia a maior parte dos seus alunos e não foi nada difícil dar-me bem com todos eles felizmente.

In the same day Nuno drived me to Carcavelos as 4pm, more specifically to the HQ of CRCQL where Puremocean, a local Bodyboard school of Carcavelos, I knew already the teacher, Paulinho Costa, since him and his bodyboard school went to Azores to the 1st National Open back at 2009. I already knew most of the kids and it wasn't difficult to get along well with them all fortunately.

Seguiu-se uma viagem de 2h até à Figueira da Foz. Chegamos pelas 19:45h e fomos logo para a praia do Cabedelo, onde se iria realizar os Esperanças e o Pro Junior. O mar estava uma grande porcaria mas deu para brincar.

Then it fallowed a 2h drive to Figueira da Foz. We arrived arround 7:45pm and went straight to Cabedelo's beach, the beach of Groms and Pro Junior comps. The conditions were pretty bad but still had some fun.

Depois da surfada, fomos para um Surf Camp local. Adorei lá estar, o Surf Camp oferecia uma qualidade fantástica a um preço não muito caro.

After the session, we went to a local surf camp. I loved being there, that Surf Camp offers a fantastic quality at a not too expensive price.

No dia a seguir (28 Junho), fomos para a Praia do Cabedelo (25min do surfcamp) e lá chegámos pelas 9h da manhã. Era o 1º dia da 4ª Etapa dos Esperanças. Nos Sub-16, eu era o Heat 9 de 12 heats. Passei em 1º com algum destaque e com o maior score do dia (11.45pts) e maior nota de onda (6.35pts). Estava motivado para o meu próximo heat.

The following day (June 28), we went to Cabedelo (25min away from our surfcamp) and we got arrived to the beach arround 9am. It was the first day of Groms 4th stage. In U-16, I was the Heat 9 of 12 heats. I got 1st and the highest score of the day (11.45pts) and highest score wave (6.35pts). I was motivated for my next heat.

No dia a seguir (29 Junho), passei o meu Heat (Ronda 2) mais uma vez em primeiro lugar com algum destaque dos outros competidores do meu heat e nos Quartos-de-final a história voltou a repetir-se. Realmente tudo estava a correr-me bem e eu estava super motivado. Ainda para mais eu estava super feliz com tudo o apoio que estava a receber através do Facebook / telemóvel de todos os meus amigos / conhecidos e mais ainda quando ligava à minha mãe após cada heat e deixava-a com uma felicidade enorme na qual deixava-me super satisfeito e mais que preparado para o próximo heat.

The next day (June 29), I passed my Heat (Round 2) once again in first place and Quarter-final happen the same thing. I realised that I was actually going well in the comp and I was motivated and happy. I was even more hapier with all the support I was receiving through Facebook / mobile phone of all my friends / knowed people and even more so when I called to my mom heat after heat and leave her with a great happiness which let me super happy and more than ready for my next heat.

Segue-se o dia final (30 Junho), com as meias e finais de cada escalão. A minha meia final perdi em 3º lugar e o resultado só foi oficial após a buzina. Cá fora, uns achavam que fui desvalorizado, outros roubado e outros discordaram com alguns scores das minhas ondas. Por mais razões que houvesse para haver tal injustiça, o destino achou que deveria parar por ali. Apenas deixou-me um pouco mal pois queria chegar até à final e ganhar. Mas mesmo assim já não foi mau pois após o meu heat o Manuel Centeno ainda veio ao pé de mim e deixou-me com algumas palavras de muita força, que certamente foram uma recompensa àquele resultado e palavras essas que me deixaram super emocionado e quase me corriam lágrimas pela cara como forma de agradecimento por aquelas palavras. Foi algo que nunca me tinham dito daquela maneira e ainda por cima um bodyboarder como o Centeno. Ficou sem dúvida marcado.

The next day was the final day (June 30), with the semis and finails. My semi final I lost in 3rd place and the official result was only after the horn sound. In the beach, some people thought I were undervalued, some other thoguht that I had been stolen and others disagreed with some of my scored waves. For more reasons there were to be such injustice, the fate decided that I should stop there. It just left me a little upset because I wanted soo bad to reach the final and win. But things weren't bad att all because after my heat Manuel Centeno came up to me and left me with some strong words, which were certainly a reward to that result and words that made me very excited and I almost tears ran down my face like thanking him for those words. It was something that no one said to me like that and such a bodyboarder like Centeno. It was undoubtedly marked.

Mas pondo as provas um pouco à parte. No Surf Camp quando vínhamos da praia, estávamos sempre entretidos com algo. Ou era na piscina, ou era a jogar ping-pong, ou era na Internet, ou era a ler revistas de Bodyboard, ou era a ver TV, ou era simplesmente a conversar uns com os outros a apreciar a preveligiada paisagem. Foi sem dúvida muito bom estar lá a conviver também com outro pessoal que lá estava para os campeonatos.

But putting the comps a bit apart. At Surf Camp when we arrived from the beach, we were always entertained with something. In the pool, playing ping-pong, being in the Internet, reading bodyboard magazines, watching TV or just talking with the guys appreciating the beautifull landscape we had. It was certainly great to be there to being with other people who were there for the comps too.

Voltando à competição. No dia 1 de Julho, iniciou-se o Pro Junior. Decorreu na praia da Murtinheira (5min do surfcamp). Ronda 1, estava no Heat 9 de 16 Heats e por acaso tinha o meu amigo e que também veio de São Miguel para o Pro Junior, Pedro "Pedrim" Correia. Passei o heat em 1º lugar mas infelizmente o Pedrim teve muito azar nas ondas mas mesmo assim estava em 2º lugar e nos últimos segundos foi para 3º lugar. Foi mesmo falta de sorte. Tinha vindo de São Miguel também o Daniel Cabral, nosso amigo que também perdeu no dia a seguir (2 Julho) no seu Heat de estreia, ficando assim eu como único atleta dos Açores na competição.

Back to competition. On July 1, the Pro Junior begam. It was held Murtinheira's beach (5min away from our surfcamp). In Round 1 I was in Heat 9 of 16 Heats, and had my mate also from Azores, Pedro "Pedrim" Correia. I passed the heat in 1st place but unfortunatly Pedrim didn't had much luck on the waves but still was in 2nd place and in the final seconds he passed to 3rd place. He was really unlucky. From São Miguel for the Pro Junior also my friend Daniel Cabral, who also lost in the next day (July 2), so I was the only bodyboarder from Azores in the Pro Junior.

No dia final (3 Julho), segui-se a Ronda 2, passei o meu heat em 2º lugar, o mar estava terrível e o heat foi muito difícil, tive alguma sorte do meu lado e consegui passar em 2º lugar. Estava contente e seguia-se os 4os de final.

On the final day (July 3), in the 2nd round, I passed my heat in s2nd place, the waves were terrible and it was really a thought heat, I had some luck by my side and managed to get 2nd place. I was happy and I were in the quarter finals.

Eu era o último heat dos 4os de final, perdi em 3º lugar. Houve um competidor do meu heat que me marcou durante todo o heat, não me deixando fazer ondas. Foi algo que não percebi pois eu estava em último e ele em 3º lugar do heat e supostamente deveria estar a marcar quem estava a passar e não quem está em último e com menos hipóteses de passar, mas competição é competição e é mau quando isso acontece mas temos de aceitar isso, apesar de ser uma derrota com jogo sujo. Mesmo assim ainda fiz uma onda nos últimos 30segundos que me passou para 3º lugar. Afinal a marcação serrada pouco lhe valeu... É nestes casos que estes competidores têm de se preocupar mais em surfar e dar um bom espetáculo e menos marcações. Claro que se tem que marcar aqueles que são uma "ameaça" para nós perdemos, mas desta maneira, é simplesmente uma perda de tempo e mau.

I was the last heat of the quarter finals, were i losted in 3rd place. There were a competitor of my heat that snaked me throughout the heat, not letting me catching waves. It was something I didn't understand because I was in the last position (4th place) and he was 3rd and it's supposed he been snaking who was winning, not who is in last with less chance of passing, but competition is competition and it's bad when that happens but we have to accept that, despite being a defeat by dirty game. Yet still made a wave in the last 30 seconds that passed me to 3rd place. After snaking me the whole heat he passed to 4th in the last seconds, definetly snaking isn't the bet option in this situation ... The competitors have to focus more on surf and give a good show and less snaking. Of course you have to snake those that are a "threat" between passing and lost a het, but in my case it's simply a waste of time and bad.

De qualquer das maneiras, o destino quis que eu terminasse por aqui. Saí da água e estava normal, fui congratular os competidores que passaram no meu heat e desejar a maior sorte para o próximo heat e ainda lamentar a derrota ao outro competidor que me marcou todo o heat pois sei que competição é competição.

Anyway, fate decided that I should stop by here. I left the water and I was normal, I congratulate the other competitors who passed in my heat and wished them the best luck for the next heat.

Antes do heat, no meu interior algo me dizia que iria perder naquele heat, pois a missão estava cumprida. E mesmo na água estava super relaxado, mesmo com aquela marcação serrada. Achei super estranho tudo isso e estive a falar com a minha mãe mais de 1h após o meu heat sobre isso e cheguei à conclusão que o mais importante não é ganhar o campeonato, mas sim ganhar experiência, reconhecimento e divertir-me. Acho que Deus está a querer que eu ganhe experiência para que, quando ganhar uma prova, irá ser recordada para o resto da minha vida. Obrigada mãe!

Before the heat, something inside me told me that I was going to lose in that heat, because the mission was accomplished. And even the water I was super relaxed, even with that guy snaking me all the time. I thought all of this super weird and I talked with my mother more than a hour after my heat and I came to the conclusion that the most important thing is not winning the comp, but to gain experience, recognition and have fun. I think God is wanting me for now to gain experience for when I win a comp, I'll remembered it for the rest of my life. Thanks mom!

E assim foi, mais importante ainda que os campeonatos, foi o reconhecimento que ganhei, as palavras de conforto, os belos momentos proporcionados, os novos amigos feitos e ainda novas experiências. O campeonato estava com estruturas fantásticas, dignas de um mundial até! Podíamos exprimentar uma diversidade de coisas, fazer rappel, longboard, skimming, participar em actividades em que nos habilitávamos a ganhar máquinas fotográficas e muito mais, ainda tive a oportunidade de estar com o Piere-Louis Costes e estar presente no recorde mundial do Guiness que consisia no maior número bodyboarders possível na água e conseguímos quebrar! Foi uma autêntica festa e de grande vibes. Dantes o recorde era de 250 bodyboarders e foi na Austrália. Dia 2 de Julho na praia do Cabedelo foi de 272 bodyboarders! Foi sem dúvida o melhor campeonato em que já estive em que irei recordar.

Most important that the comps, was the recognition I had, the comfort words i received, the good times, the new friends and even the new experiences. The comp had fantastic structures! We could do a variety of things, do abseiling, longboard, skimming, participate in activities in which we could win cameras and more and still had the opportunity to be with Piere-Louis Costes and to be present in the Guinness World Record that concise as many riders as possible in the water and we break it! Big celebration and great vibes. Before us the record was 250 riders in Australia. Day 2 of July on Cadebelo's beach we were 272 riders in the water! It was without doubt the best comp I've ever been in that I will remember always.

Quero agradeçer à Puremocean pelos óptimos momentos e por me receberem, à minha mãe pela fanástica força e apoio incondicionalmente, tanto nos bons como nos maus momentos, sempre que precisasse e mesmo quando não precisava, a todos os amigos/conhecidos pela fantástica força e apoio nestes dias, vocês são fantásticos! Nunca imaginei ter tanta gente a dar-me força e estar sempre do meu lado, foi simplesmente fantástico estar a ver tudo isso e fez com que nunca me sentisse sozinho e fui sem dúvida um previligiado e para mim ganhei com toda a vossa força e apoio. Muito Muito obrigado! :) Quero também agradeçer à DRJ (Direcção Regional da Juventude), à H Sport, ao Nunito Cardoso e à minha mãe (mais uma vez) por terem tornado o meu sonho realidade! :)
